The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a large 10-storey building on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – adjacent to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she declared: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Additionally, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
